Bridgeport Hot Springs
The Sierra Nevada Mountains have numerous natural hot springs, two of which are near Bridgeport. Travertine Hot Spring is just south of Bridgeport on California State Park land. It is quite popular and is easily accessible. Numerous hot pools provide stunning views of the Sierras as you soak in the thermal water. At Travertine, water flows down from rock formations into pools, which are at a comfortable, relaxing 103–degree temperature.
Couples, families, campers, park rangers, and single visitors all enjoy the pools. While nude bathing is not prohibited, most bathers prefer to wear swim attire. There are no benches or logs near the pools, so visitors should bring something to put their personal items on. To reach Travertine Hot Spring from Bridgeport, take Highway 395 south for one half mile and then turn left at Jack Sawyer Road, which is just before the Ranger station. Continue on Jack Sawyer Road, which is a gravel road, for about one mile to reach the springs.
Buckeye Hot Spring is north of Bridgeport. It is not as accessible as Travertine and does not have as good of views of the Sierras. However, it is less crowded and has the relaxing sound of a babbling brook, with hot water cascading over the rocks. Buckeye is also clothing optional. Unlike, Travertine, Buckeye has a campground nearby, allowing visitors convenient use of the pools. There is no bathroom or running water so visitors should bring drinking water.
To reach Buckeye from Bridgeport, from Highway 395, go west on Twin Lakes Road for seven miles. Turn right just past Doc and Al’s Resort. From there, you will cross a bridge over a creek. Follow the gravel road past Buckeye Campground to the top of the hill. There you will find a parking area. The springs are down a trail towards the creek from the parking area.
